From a number cruncher to a people’s person, Venugopal Panicker has made the transition with great ease. As a fresh Chartered Accountant in 1986, Premier Automobiles Ltd was his first stop. Here’s where he honed his skills in Accounts, Banking, Payroll and Taxation.
After completing his Company Secretary qualifier, he moved to Hitech Drilling Services India Ltd. This is where he understood the workings of a corporate organisation and the complexities involved in compliances, investment and finance.
Then came along a great new opportunity at RMC Readymix India. As General Manager Finance, Venugopal had to guide the fledgling unit from being a start-up to a market leader. As CEO and Executive Director, he was involved in every area of the company’s business. Almost an entrepreneurial role, the company grew to reach a turnover of Rs. 1250 crores, spread over 88 locations with 1500 employees.
From acquiring land for new units to staffing and human resource management, he was compelled to immerse himself into every area of management. Acquisitions, mergers, and legal issues were bread and butter assignments. Then again, the issues related to funding through NCDs, banks and other sources also demanded attention. But, this rich experience was precisely what polished his managerial talent and helped generate an appetite for new challenges.
